National U18 pole vaulting champion, James Woods, is training to reach new heights in 2021 alongside coach Peter Barrett.
After an impressive 2019 and a COVID-19 restricted 2020, his sights are now set on next years World Junior Championships.

Join James for a Come and Try Pole Vault Clinic on January 11 and 12, 2o21 >

Athletics Bendigo is offering two ‘Come and Try Pole Vault Clinics’ for any athletes aged 12 and above experience the thrill of pole vault.  The two 1 hour clinics will take place at the Bendigo Regional Athletics Track on Monday and Tuesday 11th and 12th January 2021

Pole vaulting is the most challenging of all track and field events. Challenging to the athlete in that the skills partly satisfy man’s oldest desire of unaided flight and challenging to the coach who needs to accommodate the new skills and the desire to scale barriers others are yet to meet.

The sessions will run from 9:00am to 10:00am both days with the possibility of further sessions to follow.

The sessions are to be conducted by Peter Barrett with assistance from National All Schools Champion James Woods. James has represented Victoria at National Championships from Under 15 and in 2019 represented Regional Australia at the Oceania Regional Championships in Townsville. A feature of James success and development is his skills with drills for Pole Vault.

The participants are to commence with an introductory session on day one.  Athletes will learn how to hold and handle the pole and perform drills in the sand and on the grass plus other activities. Day two is to be a continuation of day one with drills in the sand pit over a bar then move to the bag. Hopefully ending with a “try to fly”.
