A start in the Gold Coast Marathon is on the mind of Bendigo distance running star Andy Buchanan. Less than a fortnight after a stellar fifth placing in the Zatopek 10,000m at Box Hill, Buchanan said a marathon debut is being considered by him and coach Scott Westcott.
Athletes from Flack Advisory Services Group-backed Bendigo Region were in hot form on home turf at the weekend’s Athletics Victoria, Australian Masters and Victorian Masters multi-event championships. There was hot competition across all age groups as the 10-discipline decathlon or seven-event heptathlon were contested at the Retreat Road complex in Flora Hill.
Liam Shadbolt cleared 1.83m at high jump to set a Bendigo Centre record for under-15s and under-14s and Eaglehawk and Bendigo Harriers kept the heat on rivals in the weekend’s sixth round of Athletics Victoria Shield League track and field action. The Bendigo round was run on Friday as a twilight/night meet at the Flora Hill complex. In a fierce fight to earn a top two place and promotion for next season, Eaglehawk scored 26,452 to be second in the division two standings.
The recent 5km Frenzy run in Bendigo was an important step toward Archie Reid’s long-time goal of selection for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Reid, 19, was one of the youngest competitors in the elite men’s field for the inaugural running of the Bendigo Harriers Athletics Club and City of Greater Bendigo-backed event at the Flora Hill track.
A group of 12 athletes with links to Flack Advisory Services Group-backed Athletics Bendigo Region clubs will compete at this weekend’s Victorian multi-event championships in Bendigo. Saturday’s and Sunday’s action at the Retreat Road complex in Flora Hill includes many vying for Australian Masters and Victorian Masters titles.
