Bendigo Bats made a brilliant start to Athletics Victoria's cross-country series in Saturday's team relays at Jells Park in Wheelers Hill. The "Bats" team marked a long-awaited and hard-fought return to Men's Premier division by scoring an eight second win from Western Athletics. Athletes in open class ran 6km, juniors ran a 3km distance. A dozen teams represented Bendigo across various age groups and distances. Bendigo's tally was five wins, three times runner-up, one third placing, two sixth placings, a ninth, and 12th.

Buchanan runs brilliant marathon debut in Hamburg

BENDIGO athlete Andy Buchanan marked his first marathon by racing to 15th place in two hours 12.23 minutes in Sunday's running of the Hamburg classic. The 31-year-old ran the equal 25th fastest time by an Australian athlete for the 42.2km distance. "I am really happy with 2:12 for my debut, but I know I can improve this by having experienced a marathon race," Buchanan said. "It's an event like no other, so you really learn a lot from each one you do."

James Woods aims to vault higher in nationals lead-up

NEWLY-CROWNED Victorian under-20 champion in pole vault, James Woods will be aiming to fly higher at this month’s national track and field championships at Sydney’s Olympic Park. A multiple record-holder for Athletics Bendigo Region, Woods recently cleared 4.80m to win gold in the state title showdown at South Melbourne’s Lakeside Stadium. The 19-year-old vaulting star will be aiming to soar higher at the Rare Air Meet being held this Sunday at Melbourne University.
