SEVERAL athletes from Bendigo Region are likely to be in contention for medals in this weekend’s start to Athletics Victoria Track and Field Championships at Melbourne’s Lakeside Stadium. Action starts on Friday night in the Albert Park precinct and rolls through Saturday and Sunday.
It was back-to-back victories as Andy Buchanan broke the Bendigo Centre open and track records at the 2022 5km Frenzy at the Flora Hill track. Meanwhile in the Elite Women’s race, Australia representative, Sarah Klein, clicked through the gears as she broke away on the last two laps to win in a time of 16:35.35. SOUTH Bendigo has missed a place in the AVSL play-offs after Saturday’s 10th and final round was run at the Bendigo Regional Athletics Complex in Flora Hill. The Bloods went into the round locked on 64 points with fourth-placed Wyndham where the top four teams in each division qualify for the March 5 play-offs.
THREE of Athletics Bendigo Region clubs endured a tough run in Saturday’s ninth round of AVSL track and field action. Fifth placing was Eaglehawk’s lowest mark in Premier division this season as Essendon, Box Hill, Glenhuntly and Diamond Valley led the way.
Moama athlete Archie Reid marked a personal best on the track as he clocked 30:08.42 the Zatopek 10,000m classic at Melbourne’s Lakeside Stadium on January 26. Andy Buchanan marked his return to the track following injury and a marathon-focused 2021. Meanwhile, Pole Vault star James Woods marked a hat-trick of victories in the Steve Hooker pole vault challenge.
