As we approach what in a normal year would be the start of our Bendigo Little Athletics and Bendigo Region/Athletics Victoria summer competitions, Athletics Bendigo General Manager, Terry Hicks provides an update on where we are placed for a start date as much as we know it at present.
Current restrictions will not allow any form of community sport to commence at this time.
The Roadmap presented by the Premier Sunday 19th September was meant to give a guide to what might be possible if a number of criteria were satisfied. The date given for community sport being available was predicted to be November 5th, but that is by no means set in stone given what needs to occur prior to that date.
Should that date come to fruition as we all hope, we then have to wait on our state bodies, Little Athletics Victoria and Athletics Victoria, to give the go ahead. The committees of both of our competitions have been hard at work in preparing as they normally would and are ready to go whenever that may be.
Athletics Victoria registration is currently open and Bendigo Little Athletics will make an announcement regarding registration shortly. Unfortunately, it is difficult to give any certainty to start dates or changes to competition formats, but I am confident – after going through similar circumstances last year – that we will have a successful Summer ahead.
Training
Unlike our city counterparts, we are least able to train and we have managed to keep the track open throughout with the cooperation of our coaches and athletes in adhering to the COVID safe rules.
I encourage everyone to continue to do this, including scanning the QR Code on entry whether you have an access token or not. Because we are training for community sport, we are able to have larger numbers in the venue provided everyone sticks to the rules. That includes no spectators unless you are supervising underage children and the distancing and sanitising requirements, we have all become used to.
