Athletes from Flack Advisory Services Group-backed Bendigo Region were in hot form on home turf at the weekend’s Athletics Victoria, Australian Masters and Victorian Masters multi-event championships. There was hot competition across all age groups as the 10-discipline decathlon or seven-event heptathlon were contested at the Retreat Road complex in Flora Hill.

South Bendigo’s Abbey Hromenko scored 3722 points to be the under-20 champion

A tally of 3722 points included excellent performances in the 100m hurdles, 15.97 seconds; 1.57m at high jump; 4.77m at long jump; 27.61m at javelin.

Hromenko capped off her first state multis by winning the 800m in 3:00.

South Bendigo clubmate James Woods was runner-up in the under-20 decathlon on 5977.

Honours went to Noah Oliver from Mentone AC on 6607 points.

A tally of 5977 points included superb feats in the high jump, 2.01m; pole vault, 4.80m; javelin, 48.35m, and 100m, 11.62 seconds.

The 50-54 years Masters decathlon was an absorbing duel between Eaglehawk’s David Chisholm, South Bendigo’s Greg Hilson, and Collingwood Harriers’ Justin Hanrahan.

A dual world champion in Masters decathlon, Hanrahan’s score of 7017 points broke the Australian Masters record for the 50-54 class held by Eaglehawk’s Terry Hicks.

Hilson scored 4976 points to be runner-up in the weekend’s contest as Chisholm was third on 4523 points.

The only event Hanrahan did not win was the 1500m as Hilson charged to victory in 5:03 and the Collingwood champion was next on 5:27.

Other high-scoring events for Hilson included long jump, 4.93m; high jump, 1.53m; and 2.70m at pole vault.

Chisholm performed well in the 400m, 59.40; 100m hurdles, 18.32, and javelin, 30.92.

Another world masters decathlon champion, Geoff Shaw from Bendigo Harriers scored 6816 points as he claimed the 70-74 years title.

Shaw’s best events were high jump, 1.38m; 80m hurdles, 15.72; discus, 24.20; pole vault, 2.70m; and 25.71m mark at javelin.

Trudy Haines, mother of Abbey Hromenko, tallied up 2775 points to claim the 50-54 years Masters title.

Highs for Haines were a leap of 1.29m at high jump, mark of 7.80m in shot put, 200m in 35.07, and leap of 3.43m at long jump.

Eaglehawk’s Kathryn Heagney scored 3448 points to be the 70-74 years titleholder.

Best events for Heagney were the 200m, 35.32; javelin, 11.07m; and 800m, 3:28.7.

Monique Gavriliadis from Bendigo Harriers scored 3580 points to be 8th in the under-18 heptathlon.

In the under-16s event, Harriet Gall from Harriers scored 3552 points to be 8th as South Bendigo’s Emma Orme was 10th on 2750 points.
